Responding to news that air pollution limits for the whole of 2016 have already been breached in London, Labour’s London Assembly Environment Spokesperson, Murad Qureshi AM, said:
“If air pollution limits for the entire year are already being breached, it’s obvious that we face a very serious problem.
“Today’s figures show that London’s air has become increasingly toxic during Boris’ time as Mayor. Only last summer the Mayor conceded that nearly 10,000 lives in the capital are lost prematurely every year to air pollution. Knowing the scale of the problem, it’s outrageous that he hasn’t gone further to tackle this silent killer.
“London needs an ambitious and far reaching strategy for tackling air pollution, on a scale far higher than that we’ve seen under Boris Johnson. That means a bigger Ultra Low Emission Zone with tighter restrictions on the most polluting vehicles. Unless the Mayor takes steps to see that happen in his remaining months at City Hall, he’ll be leaving a very toxic legacy for Londoners."
