Dr Onkar Sahota responds to reports that the London Ambulance Service spent almost £9m last year on private ambulances

Responding to reports that the London Ambulance Service spent almost £9m last year on private ambulances,London Assembly Labour Group Health Spokesperson, Dr Onkar Sahota AM, said:

“Spending almost £9m a year on private ambulances shows just how far the Government is willing to privatise the London NHS. The amount given to private companies to run ambulance services has rocketed by 1011% since 2011/12 yet at the same time ambulance response times have gone down by nearly two minutes.

“Not only is it taking longer to reach patients in a life-threatening condition, the London Ambulance Service is increasingly having to rely on unaccountable private companies to deliver the service as a result of the immense pressure being placed upon it.”

“With the NHS in London facing massive financial challenges people will question why we are paying profit making companies to deliver blue light services."
