Responding to reports of the Health Secretary’s ‘new deal’ for GP services, Labour London Assembly Health Spokesperson Dr Onkar Sahota AM said:
“Once again the Health Secretary has shown that he simply does not understand the challenges facing GP services.
“Overstretched practices, low morale amongst staff and doctors jumping at the first opportunity to retire will not be remedied by golden handshakes. Promising an arbitrary number of new doctors, seemingly plucked out of thin air, will also do very little to solve the GP crisis we’re faced with in London.
“If the Health Secretary is serious about delivering round the clock care, then he must also be serious about valuing healthcare professionals and ensuring that the NHS is a place where people want to work. This starts with making sure there is the funding and culture change necessary not only to recruit more GPs, but to support and retain hardworking doctors.”
