Joanne McCartney AM responds to Met Commissioner's comments about funding for counter terrorism

Responding to comments from the Met’s commissioner at today’s Police and Crime Committee, that officers would have to be redeployed from other areas if more government funding was not given for counter terrorism, London Assembly Labour Group Crime Spokesperson Joanne McCartney AM said:

“It’s vitally important that the Met have the resources they need to fund counter terrorism efforts including more firearms officers.

“As the Commissioner said today unless the Government stumps up the cash to properly fund counter terrorism policing they will be left with no choice but to redeploy officers from other areas.

“We must remember that if officers are pulled out of neighbourhood policing to resource anti-terrorism efforts, we will be cutting back one of the best forms of community intelligence there is.

“Stephen Greenhalgh has said we need an extra £20m from Government. Tough talk alone from the Home Office won’t cut it; we need them to put their money where their mouth is.”
