Len Duvall AM responds to record London population figures

Responding to today’s figures released by the Greater London Authority showing London has hit record population of 8.6m, London Assembly Labour Group Leader, Len Duvall AM, said:

“We live in the best city in the world, so it’s to be expected that record numbers of people wish make London their home. Given the popularity of our city, and the vast economic contribution it makes to the rest of the UK, it’s all the more important that the Government provides the funding necessary to meet this growing global city’s needs.

“Population growth of this magnitude brings vast challenges. Already London’s transport infrastructure, housing supply and emergency services are being stretched. Continued investment in infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and Crossrail 2 is vital to deliver respite from increasingly overcrowded buses and tubes and for the city to remain competitive. Londoners are desperate to see much needed investment in the capital’s transport and wider infrastructure and today’s population figures show why that funding is so necessary.

“Today’s record population figures clearly demonstrate why the Mayor needs to be flying the flag for London and putting pressure on his Westminster colleagues to stump up the cash necessary to support the capital’s growth. It’s not just about the capital, a strong London is vital for a strong UK.”
