London "cannot afford to be left out of the devolution debate" - Len Duvall AM

Commenting on the Chancellor’s announcement on devolution, Leader of the London Assembly Labour Group Len Duvall AM said:

“The capital cannot afford to be left out of the devolution debate. Whilst it is right other regions are offered new powers, London also needs to be at the heart of any new devolution settlement, this means both City Hall and London’s councils.

“Last year the capital put £34bn more into the Treasury than it took out, but London’s success is not guaranteed. Our population is set to reach 9 million by 2020,  we need a new settlement which meets our infrastructure and employment demands if we are to remain competitive with other global economic centres.

“London has shown that devolution to the cities works, however our story is not finished. Devolving new powers to the capital, particularly over property tax retention, skills and public health, would further spur on London’s economic growth with benefits far beyond the South East.

“What we cannot end up with is a piecemeal two-speed system of devolution developing where different areas are played off against one another and where the capital is denied the support it needs. The Chancellor must recognise the reality- that London’s success is not just a matter for the capital, but for the entire country”
