Murad Qureshi AM Statement on London Diesel Charge

Diesel

Responding to reports that the Mayor of London will impose a £10 charge on diesel vehicles driven into central London, London Assembly Labour Group Environment Spokesperson, Murad Qureshi AM, said:

“Air pollution is a silent killer in London - more than 4,000 people die prematurely in our city each year due to poor air quality. But today’s announcement is half-baked. Instead of banning diesel vehicles completely from an Ultra-Low Emissions Zone, the Mayor is simply fining them £10 for the privilege. And by not implementing this until 2020, Boris is kicking the problem into the long grass.

“By that time, Boris will have left City Hall four years previously, and around 51,000 Londoners will have died prematurely since he took office in 2008. London needs bold action now. The Mayor should bring forward these proposals from 2020 to an earlier date.”

This article implies that all diesel vehicles – including taxis, buses, lorries and vans – should be banned if their emissions exceed those proscribed in the so-called Ultra Low Emission Zone, even if their emissions are well below those proscribed.

The UK, and London in particular, should plan for a time, preferably in the very near future, when fossil fuel should not power vehicles (even electric ones, unless from CO2-free power generation). This is particularly because climate change is accelerating as an obvious consequence of most governments’ self-defeating policies of socially and environmentally unsustainable economic growth.
