Record breaking Tube passenger numbers show the problem of Government cuts

Commenting on the TfL announcement of record breaking passenger numbers on London Underground, Labour’s London Assembly Transport Spokesperson, Val Shawcross AM said:

“The record breaking number of passengers on the Tube show how important it is that Government continues to support and invest in the capital.

“By cutting £700m from TfL’s budget in the Spending Review the Government seems to be scaling back its support for vital investment in the capital’s transport system despite its rapidly growing population and workforce. When record breaking passenger numbers are met with some of the biggest cuts in TfL’s history it’s clear there is a real problem.

“London’s transport network is a key selling point for the capital resulting in economic growth which brings massive benefits to the whole UK. Government should be doing all it can to keep the capital moving and ease overcrowding, not saddling TfL with hundreds of millions of pounds in draconian cuts. ”

-       TfL today (Wednesday 9th December) announced that on Friday 4 December 2015, 4.821 million customers travelled on the Tube making it the network’s busiest day ever.

-       In the Spending Review last month the Government confirmed it will phase out the resource grant made to TfL which will mean savings of “£700 million in 2019-20.”
