Tom Copley AM statement on Boris Johnson's confirmation that he has entered the Conservative Party selection process for the Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat.
Responding to Boris Johnson’s confirmation that he will contest the Conservative Party selection for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, Tom Copley, Labour Londonwide Assembly Member, said:
“Boris Johnson’s decision to run in the Conservative Party selection for Uxbridge and South Ruislip shows that despite previously describing the Mayoralty as the “greatest job in the world”, he has treated the role as little more than a stepping stone to fulfil his parliamentary ambitions.
“Boris just hasn’t been straight with Londoners. All along he has been more interested in his own career than the needs of this city, and now London is set to be left with a part-time Mayor for almost two years if he is successful in this selection.
“The question Londoners will be asking is who will be concentrating on running the capital whilst Boris is busy fighting his selection and election campaigns? With a severe housing crisis, cuts to police and fire services and soaring travel fares, Londoners need a strong and dedicated Mayor more than ever. All Boris Johnson now offers is two years of uncertainty.”
