Val Shawcross Statement on East London River Crossing

June 30th, 2014

London Assembly Labour Group Transport Spokesperson Val Shawcross today supported the London Chamber of Commerce’s proposals for a river crossing linking Beckton and Thamesmead at Gallions Reach. Commenting on the proposed 'Bridge East London', Val Shawcross said:

“Boris’ scrapping of the proposed bridge at Gallions Reach was one of his first and worst acts as Mayor in back in 2008. While I welcome his u-turn on the need for this crossing, it is clear that in the past six years the economic regeneration of East London has been damaged by a lack of transport connectivity across the Thames.

“A new bridge would boost road capacity, public transport connections and cycling and pedestrian routes, but must be designed and managed in a way that minimises noise and air pollution. Additional river crossings in East London are demonstrably needed, and I look forward to TfL’s consultation on how to take this option forward.”
